Bridge closure

The Monroeville Mall bridge over Route 22 will be closed through mid-August for deck replacement work, PennDOT officials said.

Westbound Route 22 traffic will detour by turning left onto Mall Boulevard and right onto Mall Circle to Don Drive. Eastbound traffic will follow the opposite direction.

The work is part of PennDOT’s $23.84 million William Penn Highway preservation and rehabilitation project, on the highway’s stretch between Huntingdon Drive and Mosside Boulevard. The project is expected to wrap up in the fall.

Election speaker

Pennsylvania GOP member Ryan Walbrecher will be the featured speaker at 7 p.m. June 13 at the Monroeville Fire Company No. 4, to discuss election integrity.

Walbrecher will focus on House Bill 847, which proposes legalizing pre-election-day counts of mail-in and absentee ballots and widening the window of opportunity to challenge ballots.

The event is free and open to the public. The fire hall is at 4370 Northern Pike in Monroeville.

Friends at market

Friends of Monroeville Public Library will be at the Lions Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to noon for four Saturdays beginning on June 15 at Monroeville Mall.

Friends will be on hand to distribute library programs, event guides and online resource information, as well as free bookmarks for children to color.

Tickets will be available for purchase on June 15, 22 and 29 and July 6 for two raffle baskets: a Giant Eagle basket or a basket with Carnegie Science Center, Heinz History Center and Lokay Lanes passes and $185 in gift cards. Winners will be drawn July 8.

Monroeville Lions Farmers’ Market is located at 501 Mall Circle Drive, in the parking lot outside of Dick’s Sporting Goods.

History speaker series

Lifelong amateur historian Henry Bowden will present “The History of Turtle Creek” at 7 p.m. June 17 at the Monroeville Public Library, 4000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

In 1769, widow Martha Miers and her family purchased 360 acres of land in the area, becoming the first European settlers within the Turtle Creek Valley. Born and raised in Turtle Creek, Bowden is a 1970 graduate of Turtle Creek High School. He is a reenactor, public speaker and member of many local historical societies. This is the initial presentation in a six-part series by Bowden. All talks will take place the third Monday every month, from June to November, in the library’s gallery.

• July 15: Battle of Bushy Run

• Aug. 19: In Defense of Aaron Burr

• Sept. 16: Information event on William Penn

• Oct. 21: Bowden as a William Penn impersonator

• Nov. 18: Presentation on Sam Adams

The all-ages events are open to the public. Preregistration is not required. For questions, contact Cory Little, the library’s head of adult programming, at 412-372-0500, ext. 122 or by emailing littlec2@einetwork.net.

Revolutionary War service

A Revolutionary War service will be held at 10 a.m. on June 30 at Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church, 1622 James St., Monroeville.

The commemoration is an effort to reenact a worship service with music and communion on the Western Pennsylvania frontier that was led by Presbyterian missionaries during the Revolutionary War.

Using biblical passages, the service will discuss themes that were tackled during the American Revolution and address issues of today’s society.

The service will be held outdoors and is open to the public. Participants are invited to bring a bagged lunch for a time of fellowship after the service.
